The controlled appellation requirements for Barolo are among the most stringent for any wine. From the Piedmont area of Northern Italy, only 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown in the designated production zone may be used. Barolo is aged at least three years with at least two years in French wooden barrels. it must achieve a natural minimum alcohol level of 13%. Barolo belongs to the family of "Big Red Wines" where it rules as The King of Wines.
